Your Free Tier Is Subsidizing Someone Else's Business
I want to talk about something that most SaaS founders figure out too late. You launch a free tier because it is the right GTM play. Users try the product, fall in love, upgrade to paid. That is the plan. The reality? A meaningful chunk of your "users" are bots, throwaway accounts, and opportunists who will never pay you a cent.

Why CAPTCHAs Make Things Worse
The default advice from every Stack Overflow answer and every "how to prevent bots" blog post is the same: add a CAPTCHA. We think this is one of the worst things you can do to your signup flow. Here is why.
CAPTCHAs punish your real users. Studies consistently show an 8-12% drop in conversion rates when you add a CAPTCHA to a form. Think about what that means. Every signup form submission carries a surprising amount of signal. The email address itself, the IP address, the user agent, the timing of the request. All of this data is already hitting your server. You are just throwing it away.
Here is what you can learn from a single email address without asking the user a single extra question:
Domain reputation. Is the email on a known disposable domain? There are over 40,000 burner email domains in active rotation. A simple lookup eliminates the most obvious abuse.
MX record validation. Does the domain actually accept email? A shocking number of fake signups use domains with no mail server configured. The email address literally cannot receive mail, but most signup forms accept it without blinking.
Email pattern analysis. Real people tend to sign up with some variation of their name. Bots tend to generate random strings. The email sarah.chen.design@gmail.com looks very different from xk7qm3vb9@gmail.com when you run entropy analysis on the local part. Both are valid Gmail addresses. Only one belongs to a person.
Disposable email detection. Beyond known burner domains, you can detect disposable email patterns. Catch-all domains, recently registered domains, domains with suspicious DNS configurations. The signals compound.
IP and behavioral signals. Is the request coming from a datacenter IP or a residential connection? Is the user agent consistent with a real browser? Have you seen 15 signups from this IP in the last hour? These are not hard questions to ask, but most signup flows never ask them.
The best part about this approach: it is completely invisible to the user. No puzzles, no friction, no "prove you are human" interruptions. A real user fills out your signup form and gets through instantly. A bot fills out your signup form and gets caught by the 30 signals running silently in the background.

A lot of anti-fraud tools will give you a yes/no answer. Valid email or not. Human or bot. This sounds clean, but it falls apart quickly in the real world.
Consider someone who signs up with a Gmail address from a VPN. Is that suspicious? Maybe. Is it fraud? Probably not. A lot of developers use VPNs daily. A binary check either blocks them (bad for business) or lets them through (no protection). A scoring system says "this has a few risk signals, flag it but don't block it." That is a much better answer.
Scoring also gives you data you can act on later. If you store the score and signal breakdown with each user record, you can go back and analyze patterns. Maybe you discover that 90% of your chargebacks came from users who scored below 45 at signup. Now you have a threshold you can tighten with confidence, backed by your own data.
